Former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said during an interview on MSNBC that he would support a second presidential term for Joe Biden in spite of his cognitive decline.

"A presidency is more than just one man," said Johnson, who served under President Barack Obama. "I would take Joe Biden at his worst day at age 86 so long as he has people around him like Avril Haines, Samantha Power, Gina Raimondo supporting him, over Trump any day."

Johnson then criticized former President Donald Trump's role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots and blamed Trump's circle for not putting a stop to it.

Johnson's interview follows the first presidential debate between Biden and Trump. Biden's performance ignited calls from political pundits and Democratic strategists to end his bid for the presidency.

A poll found that 67% of Democrats think Biden should step down as the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party.

While the New York Times editorial board and other media outlets have called for Biden to be replaced, it is unlikely to happen for two reasons. First, Biden and his campaign team said there is no chance that Biden will end his bid. Second, attempts to replace his name on state ballots will likely be met with legal battles by Republicans.

Under Democratic Party rules, the party can't replace a presidential candidate. Delegates at the Democratic National Convention must vote in line with who constituents voted for in the primary election.

Another problem that could arise if the Democratic Party attempted to replace Biden is that several states have specific rules preventing a political party from replacing a candidate.

In Wisconsin, a candidate's name can only be removed if he or she dies, and in Nevada, the deadline for replacing candidates from the ballot, which was June 28, has already passed. However, there is an exception if a candidate is deemed mentally incapacitated, possibly prompting months of legal battles.

While in Georgia, there is still time for Biden to be booted from the ballot — if his name is removed up to 60 days before the election.

Conservative think tank group the Heritage Foundation said it is preparing in case the Democratic Party seeks to remove Biden as their nominee.
