COHOES, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — On June 18, the Cohoes Industrial Development Agency (IDA) voted to accept the proposal submitted by Watervliet’s Schuyler Bakery for the former Golden Krust Bakery site at 180 Ontario Street in Cohoes. Golden Krust Bakery burned down in 2006.

Schuyler Bakery owners Cyndy and Scott Davenport proposed an expansion of their business on the site which includes three parcels: two houses and a warehouse. According to the Request for Proposals document , they are planning on fixing up the houses, using the warehouse as a distribution point and commercial bakery, and building a 1,000 square-foot retail bakery, as well as another warehouse, on the site.

The existing warehouse would be used to supply the Watervliet bakery, the new retail space, and any other bakeries the Davenports may open in the future. The fixed-up houses could be for bakery staff or can be rented out.

The retail space would also be a café selling baked goods and sandwiches with seating. The eatery may also have some additional apartment upstairs.

At some point, the Davenports would like to build a 20,000 square-foot warehouse on the site and move their other businesses there. Their businesses Upstate Bakeries, Futia’s Famous Dough, and Mountain Rise Organics are currently in a rented space in Rotterdam.

“Although there is still some work to be done before this comes to fruition, we are excited to begin that process with Schuyler Bakery,” said Cohoes IDA.

Schuyler Bakery was founded in 1954 by the Halayko family and was sold in 2018 to the Davenports. Golden Krust Bakery operated on Ontario Street for nearly 60 years before burning.

As for a timeline, the Davenports hope to start turning the existing warehouse into the commercial bakery as soon as possible. The houses and retail space would take about six months to a year, said the documents, and the building of the new warehouse would not start for another two to four years.
