Cody Gakpo just gave Liverpool everything they need to know about Anthony Gordon transfer

Cody Gakpo is on fire at Euro 2024. The Liverpool star was once again on the scoresheet as the Netherlands entered the knockout stages.

Having already scored against Poland and Austria, the 25-year-old added his third of the tournament to open the scoring against Romania. The goal moves him joint-top of the goalscoring charts at the tournament.

And he brought up his latest strike in now-trademark fashion. Once again cutting inside from the left, Gakpo managed to beat Romania goalkeeper Florin Nita at his near post with a well-struck effort that once again demonstrated his confidence.

It’s yet another reminder to new Liverpool boss Arne Slot , who will no doubt be watching on with interest as Gakpo continues to earmark himself as one of the players of the tournament.

By this point, Slot should have come to the conclusion that Gakpo is best-suited to a position on the left. The forward spent much of his time under Jurgen Klopp as a number nine, but struggled to nail down a place in the side amid a mixed run of form.

And given the Reds’ recent transfer dealings, Gakpo may well save his club some money this summer. Liverpool recently held talks over a move for Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon , although a potential deal broke down due to the Magpies wanting Jarell Quansah in return.

According to The Athletic , Liverpool still retains an interest in Gordon, and it remains to be seen whether the Reds will return to the table to try and secure his signing. Slot is said to want to improve on his forward options this summer, with Luis Diaz linked with a move away.

Even if the Colombia international were to depart though, Liverpool clearly already has an option ready to step up in his absence, even without a move for Gordon. Gakpo has demonstrated beyond any doubt this summer that his best position is out on the left, and has also shown a clinical instinct that has perhaps been lacking from Diaz’s game.

And the Reds aren’t lacking for options on that side of the pitch. Diogo Jota has often played on the same flank, while Darwin Nunez has also been used as an option in the past.

Meanwhile, options on the right are not as plentiful, and with Mohamed Salah entering the final year of his contract, the Reds could soon be left with just Harvey Elliott and Ben Doak as potential options there. So, while Slot may want to bolster his attacking options, Gakpo is showing why the left-hand side, and a move for Gordon, shouldn’t be his priority this summer.
