Summer heat can be unbearable, and while heading indoors to crank up the air conditioning is one way to escape it, there’s a more environmentally friendly solution — planting trees. A recent experiment by Texas nursery owner and TikTok creator Smith'sGardentown shows just how much trees can help cool down any space.

See how trees can cook things down by up to 10 degrees! 🌳🌡️learn how shade and transpiration help keep urban areas cooler. Find out why more trees mean cooler cities and how they fight the heat island effect. #smithsgardentown #climatecooling #urbanforestry #naturepower #shade #coolintheshade #powerofshade #shadetrees #plantmoretrees #planttrees #letsgrow

First, let's talk about the experiment. Armed with an infrared laser thermometer, the creator tested the temperatures of different surfaces on a 103-degree day. The results were illuminating. The temperature on asphalt was a scorching 120 degrees while over in the grass, the thermometer read a cooler 97 degrees. Crushed granite and mulch beds in full sun were nearly as hot as the asphalt, clocking in at 117 and 114 degrees respectively. But the real magic happened under the shade of an oak tree; the temperature here was a somewhat more comfortable 92 degrees. Even with some cloud cover, the difference was pretty big.

Trees have a remarkable ability to drive down local temperatures dramatically, as we get to see in this experiment. The simple act of planting a tree can make your surroundings much more comfortable. Imagine walking in your yard, shaded by lush green canopies, instead of baking under the relentless sun. Also, having more vegetation around your home can save you money on energy bills . The cooling effect of trees reduces the need for air conditioning, making your home more energy-efficient.

What Are The Benefits of Planting Trees?

But the benefits of adding trees to your backyard extend beyond just cooling. Trees provide shade, which protects you from harmful UV rays. They also improve air quality by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen. In fact, a mature tree can absorb up to 48 pounds of carbon dioxide annually. Furthermore, they support local wildlife by offering habitat and food sources. Birds, squirrels, and pollinators all thrive in tree-rich environments. Plus, trees enhance the aesthetic appeal of your property, potentially increasing its market value.

So, if you're looking to beat the heat and enjoy a myriad of other benefits, planting trees is a no-brainer. Trees not only cool down your space but also contribute to a healthier, more beautiful environment. Next time you’re sweating it out, remember that a little greenery can go a long way!
