40 spinach products were recalled due to Listeria concerns.

If you have bought bagged spinach products lately, you will want to make sure they aren't on an extensive recall list.

A New York company has recalled 40 types of bagged spinach after traces of listeria were found in a batch.

Solata Foods, LLC., which operates seven different brands of produce, has issued a recall of its line of “fresh spinach” products. These were distributed in retail stores in New York, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

    What We Know

According to the FDA, the batch was sold as spinach and salad mixes in various sizes across several brand names, such as Solata, Gaia, Uncle Vinny’s, Full Circle, Bogopa, Famer Direct, and more.

All packages with the potentially contaminated greens have lot numbers 40606 and 11006 on the package, with expiration dates of June 20 and June 24.

The deadly bacteria was found in a 9-ounce package of Bogopa Fresh Spinach. Production of the greens has since been suspended, according to the recall notice.

Anyone with the impacted products is urged to return them wherever they were originally purchased for a refund. No receipt is needed to refund recalled products.

    What Is Listeria?

Listeria is a serious infection typically caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Those who become infected may experience a fever, muscle aches, headaches, a stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, seizures, diarrhea, and vomiting within 24 hours. However, it can take symptoms up to 70 days to develop. If you have eaten the recalled spinach, you should monitor yourself for symptoms over the next few weeks.

It is especially dangerous for young children, elderly adults, pregnant people, and those with weakened immune systems.

Most individuals recover after three days and rarely become seriously ill, but there is a slight risk of death. Of the nearly 1,600 Americans who become infected annually only about 260 die a year, the CDC has reported.

Earlier this year, the FDA announced a massive recall of hundreds of products due to a years-long Listeria outbreak. That outbreak has led to hundreds of products across different sources and states being recalled, and it is still ongoing. It has sickened hundreds of people.

A week ago, more than 65 ice cream products belonging to 13 different brands were recalled due to Listeria concerns . That same week, smoked salmon was recalled in 15 states due to the presence of Listeria.
