MEWA’s GED program offers a crucial lifeline for students who have fallen behind in credit.

The GED (General Education Diploma) program started during World War II to help returning servicemen complete their high school education. Since the 1940s, the GED program has been essential for those unable to complete their high school diplomas to enter the workforce, go to community college, or get trade apprenticeships.

MEWA’s GED program is especially vital in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. When everything shut down in the spring of 2020, many Oregon students fell behind. These students, now seeking jobs, apprenticeships, or further education in community college, need a solution. MEWA’s GED program emerged as a viable option for those wanting to complete their high school education in a timely manner but unsure how to proceed.

MEWA's GED program has achieved notable success. This past school year, MEWA had 34 students complete their GED with the program. Students who succeed through MEWA’s GED program come from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Whether parents working to complete their education while caring for kids, students who are caregivers for their own parents or grandparents, or students with medical issues that made high school attendance difficult, MEWA’s GED program provides the flexibility and support needed to help these students succeed and move on to the next step in their education or careers.

The core classes in the program are online and can be accessed anytime 24/7. Students can also attend on-site labs to meet with a teacher or schedule a Zoom or phone call meeting to go over important concepts.
