July 4 beach goers might be quiet vacationing; what it is and why it happens

As summer hits its stride, the beaches of Delaware and the Jersey Shore are teeming with sun-and-fun seekers.

Tucked in among the sand-covered babies and tanning teens are members of a subtle new trend: quiet vacationers.

Much like the concept of “quiet quitting” in the workplace, quiet vacationing is about working in a break without taking a break from work.

Forbes calls the trend “the latest symptom of a toxic work culture,” but not everyone who joins a Zoom call while their toes are in the sand is unhappy at work.

A recent Washington Post report said some quiet vacationers - largely millennials - want to hold onto vacation time and PTO for bigger trips or emergencies.

As Axios pointed out last month , nearly half of workers in a Harris Poll survey admitted to quiet vacationing around Independence Day.

Why Delaware and South Jersey are ideal quiet vacation spots

Shore towns from Rehoboth Beach to Cape May offer perfect settings for quiet vacationing, particularly with the Fourth of July holiday begging to be a four-day weekend.

Area beach towns are relatively close to major population centers and already beckon day trippers . So, it stands to reason that Dewey Beach or Long Beach Island would appeal to quiet vacationers.

The Harris Poll study found that millennials and managers – both strong demographics for beach trips – were more likely to admit to quiet vacationing.
