That '70s Décor
The 1970s were a time when home decor looked like it just didn't care — floral and geometric patterns, shag carpets, and psychedelic colors ruled the day. Sadly, all of that fashionable funk would be shunned by many in the decades to follow.
But then the pandemic hit, and as we all found ourselves homebound, we realized our spaces lacked a certain groove. Interior designers started bringing back elements of the 70s, adding touches of retro charm to modern homes.
If you’re one of those who would rather live on the set of "That 70s Show," rejoice (but keep the lava lamps tucked away, we've been through enough these past couple of years — let's not get carried away).
Here are 10 decor trends of the '70s that are coming back with the groove.

1. Macramé Everything
Macramé is back, baby! The knot-tying craft popular in the 1970s is turning up in the bohemian chic living rooms , hallways, and bedrooms of today. Wall hangings, plant holders, and even curtains that used to adorn our parents' homes have swung back into style.

2. Rattan Furniture
Rattan furniture never truly went out of style — it just took a little time off to, you know, relax by the pool. But good news for fans of the natural material: Rattan is making a comeback in a big way, popping up in homes and across Instagram feeds since the late 2020s.
3. Shag Carpets
Depending on who you ask, shag carpets — the ubiquitous floor covering of every 70s home — were either fluffy paradises or dust pits that transformed your house into a germ-infested dungeon. Well, love them or hate them, the shag carpets are coming back.
Thankfully, this time they come in a less unhinged form . Shorter piles mean the floor can actually breathe, and dirt can be actually vacuumed without your machine overheating. And the colors are mercifully less ... horrendously dull.

4. Wallpaper
In the 70s, wallpaper was the interior design equivalent of a disco ball. Then someone decided they were kitschy and outdated, so off they came. But guess what? Designers changed their minds, and now the wallpaper is rolling back in style in all of its groovy glory. As a bonus, today's wallpapers are way easier to install, with peel-and-stick options that even your cat could manage.

5. Floral Upholstery
What made every 1970s living room feel like a perpetual garden party is blooming back into our homes. Floral designs are now more refined and versatile, fitting seamlessly into contemporary and eclectic styles. Whether it's a statement sofa or a few accent chairs, floral upholstery can breathe new life into any room.

6. Houseplants Galore
The '70s were all about bringing the outdoors in, and this trend is flourishing once again. Houseplants are not just for the green-thumbed anymore; they're a staple of modern decor. From spider plants to fiddle leaf figs, there's a plant for every level of plant parent.

7. Wood Paneling
Hold onto your bell-bottoms because wood paneling is back in a big way. Luckily the dark, oppressive panels of the past are staying there, and today's wood paneling is all about light, bright, and modern finishes.

8. Low-Slung Soft Furniture
Low-slung squishy furniture and the legendary Togo sofa — what the New York Times describes as the sweatpants of furniture — are making a soft landing back into our homes. These iconic '70s loungers surged back in style during the pandemic when we all realized our furniture wasn't cutting it for our new homebound lifestyles. Someone with a keen design sense — or a nostalgic love for the '70s — remembered that the squishy sofas of that era were the ultimate couch potato enablers. And now, they're back!

9. Avocado Green and Harvest Gold
There are some things from the 1970s that should stay there, like disco, bell bottoms, and the ugly color hues that epitomized suburbia life of the era. But no, Avocado Green and Harvest Gold — the hues everyone loves to hate — have returned. So, if you're feeling nostalgic for a time when your living room could double as a set from The Brady Bunch, these colors are your ticket.

10. Vinyl Records and Turntables
While technically not décor, vinyl records and turntables are making a stylish return as both a musical and visual statement. They add a touch of retro coolness and make your living space feel instantly more cultured and interesting.
