More than 1,000 people have been evacuated after a fire ripped through an area near Los Angeles. Hundreds of firefighters have been tackling the blaze which has already torn through 4,400 acres. The Californian fire department warned that even more residents could be evacuated if the fire continued to rage. In a statement they said: "Residents are reminded to remain vigilant and be prepared to evacuate if fire activity changes.”Dramatic pictures showed firefighters battling to contain surrounding flames on Saturday night.California State Park Services evacuated people from the Hungry Valley recreation area in Gorman and both Hungry Valley and the Pyramid Lake reservoir were closed. The blaze started about 1.45pm on Saturday while an investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire.The fire was moving southeast toward Pyramid Lake and crews were constructing perimeter fire lines while aircraft worked against limited visibility to stop the fire's progress, the fire department said.The South Coast Air Quality Management District posted an alert on X as it warned residents of Castaic and Santa Clarita to stay indoors and use an air conditioner or purifier such was the density of the smoke.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — A couple hiking in the desert south of Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California was rescued after running out of water, authorities said.  On Sunday, the man called 911 and reported that his girlfriend was dehydrated and weak, according to a statement from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office posted Monday on social media.  A search and rescue helicopter crew was dispatched on June 9, when temperatures reached triple digits, to the area known as Painted Canyon and found the couple huddled in a dry creek bed, the office said. A video posted online by the Sheriff’s Office shows the helicopter hovering above the couple lying on the desert floor, with the man trying to shield her with his body from the blazing sun and wind. The man and woman were then hoisted into the helicopter one by one.
