BBC host insists post suggesting Biden assassinate Trump was ‘satire’

A BBC radio host said his now-deleted social media post, which suggested President Joe Biden order that former President Donald Trump be killed, was made in jest.

The post by David Aaronovitch, the host for BBC Radio 4, was made in reference to the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision in Trump v. United States, which determined that former presidents are entitled to “presumptive immunity” for all “official acts.” Aaronovitch suggested in a post on X that he would order Trump to be “murdered” if he were in Biden’s shoes, with the post later deleted due to backlash.

“There’s now a far right pile on suggesting that my tweet about the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity is an incitement to violence when it’s plainly a satire,” Aaronovitch stated on X. “So I’m deleting it. If nothing else though it’s given me a map of some the daftest people on this site.”

Aaronovitch added in a subsequent post that those criticizing him for his original suggestion did not have any problem “with the ruling itself.”

Biden and Democratic lawmakers have condemned the Supreme Court for its decision, with the president saying it sets “a dangerous precedent” by allowing the president to be no longer constrained by the law. He added that the decision “continued the court’s attack in recent years” on various principles in the country.

Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) dismissed Biden’s comments as “fearmongering” and said it was part of the “typical ploy” to mislead voters over events happening in the U.S.

Trump, meanwhile, described the court’s ruling as a “BIG WIN FOR OUR CONSTITUTION AND DEMOCRACY” in a Truth Social post. The court’s decision comes as he is the presumptive Republican nominee for president, setting the stage for a possible rematch between him and Biden.
