Refreshing Strawberry Mojito: A Sweet Twist on a Classic

    2024-07-02

A traditional mojito is a refreshing alcoholic drink made simply with lime juice, mint leaves, sugar, rum, and club soda. This drink was made famous by Ernest Hemingway, who praised the version of the mojito he tasted in La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana, Cuba.

This spin on the traditional mojito adds muddled strawberries to the mix for a sweet summer cocktail. This version is based on the classic mojito recipe from Food.com that hails from La Bodeguita del Medio (home of Hemingway's famous mojito.)

The following recipe makes one serving.

    Ingredients

    • 4 strawberries, stemmed and sliced
    • 1 teaspoon powdered sugar
    • juice from 1 lime
    • 4 to 5 mint leaves
    • 2 ounces white rum
    • 2 ounces club soda
    • mint sprig, lime wedge, or strawberry slice for garnish

    Method

    1. Place the sliced strawberries, mint leaves, and sugar in a tall serving glass.
    2. Squeeze the lime juice into the glass, then gently mash the strawberries and mint with a muddler.
    3. Muddle gently until the strawberries break down and the mint leaves have released their mint oil.
    4. Add the ice. Then add the rum and stir.
    5. Finally, top off with the club soda and finish the drink with your garnish.

    Variations

    • Leave the strawberries out and you will have a classic mojito.
    • If you prefer a strained version, make your drink in a cocktail shaker, straining the strawberry and mint leaves out when you pour it into your cocktail glass.

    Tools Needed

    • Tall glass (traditionally a Collins glass)
    • Muddler
    • Cocktail shaker (if you want your drink strained)
