NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — For many, the Fourth of July means cookouts, pool parties, and fireworks — but for pet owners, the celebration brings anxiety and dread.
“Tragically, more pets go missing over the Fourth of July weekend than any other time of the year,” said President and CEO of American Humane, Dr. Robin Ganzert. “Loud fireworks cause some animals to panic and flee, and they are often recovered miles from home.”
Thankfully, by being vigilant and taking precautions, people can help prevent these kinds of tragedies.
Here are five tips that are veterinarian-approved that can keep pets more comfortable and safe during the holiday.
Things to do around town: July 1-7 - Know the pet. Owners who are celebrating their first holiday can usually guess if the upcoming fireworks will upset their pets. Loud noises such as thunder, doors slamming, or cars backfiring, can frighten them and if that’s the case, fireworks will too.
- Create safe havens. Rather than bringing them to a fireworks show, leave them at home in a quiet, escape-proof room or crate. Windows should be closed with the shades drawn. For extra comfort, add some background noise to muffle sounds and give them their favorite toys.
- Don’t leave them unattended. If the pet is anxious, make sure someone is there to comfort them and provide companionship. Keep them calm and don’t react to the fireworks.
- ID the pet. Make sure they’re microchipped and have up-to-date identification tags on their collars. This makes it easier to be reunited in case they do go missing.
- Call experts. Don’t medicate without first consulting with a veterinarian or an animal behaviorist. Positive reinforcement and behavior modification training can make the next holiday worry-free.
