Ways to protect your pets during 4th of July celebrations

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. - Fourth of July can be a time for lots of family fun, but it can also be a stressful event for our furry friends.

Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service says many pets get scared by fireworks and can run off, potentially become lost or getting hurt in the process.

There are a few simple things you can do to keep your pets safe during the festivities:

1. Keep pets away from fireworks. Many pets are highly sensitive to loud noises, flashing lights, and strong smells. Leave your pets indoors during fireworks festivals. If you can't leave them at home, make sure they are on a leash and under your control at all times.
2. Make sure pets wear identification. SCRAPS says all pets, even those indoors full-time, should always wear collars with ID tags. You can also make sure your pet is microchipped and properly registered with up-to-date contact information.
3. Protect pets from heat stroke during summer fun. High temperatures can put pets at risk for heat stroke, which can become deadly quickly. Never leave your pet in a parked car, even if it doesn't seem that warm outside. Hot pavement can also be dangerous for unprotected paws.
4. If your pet is scared by fireworks, ask a veterinarian for help.
   There are medications and techniques that might help alleviate your pet's fear and anxiety.
