Devotional: Be content to cede control to God

“For the sake of Christ, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” — 2 Corinthians 12:10

Many people want control over their lives. We want control over finances, relationships and security. We want everything to go our way with no missteps or mistrials. We want perfection. The only one who achieved perfection is Jesus Christ. He is the one to whom we need to give control.

Satan feeds us the lie that if we have control, we will be content. What Satan doesn’t tell us is that control brings forth anxiety. Control feeds us the lie that we have power. This is how the devil tempts us to steer away from God. If we believe we have power, then why would we need Jesus? Why would we need his salvation?

True power comes from Christ. His resurrection power over death on the cross gives us salvation. His grace and mercy gives us power over Satan. When we think we have everything figured out, God comes in and tells us that we still need him. No one is perfect. No one has everything completely under control. Only Jesus does, and he is the one we should put our faith in.

We must learn to be content with giving up control. This power we think we have is minuscule compared to the almighty creator of the universe. He holds everything in his hands. Finding contentment in living a life without power isn’t easy. That is why we must lean on God and his understanding whenever we endure trials and tribulations.

Being content and giving up our own will is following God’s divine purpose for our lives. This is what Paul is talking about in this passage. We can’t achieve everything on our own. We don’t have the strength to do it. However, God constantly reminds us through scripture that he can guide us through difficulties with help from the Holy Spirit.

We can be encouraged by the fact that he is Lord over all. He has the power. He has sovereignty. We must give it up to him and rest. Stop trying to do everything on your own. Let God take over and witness the blessings of his grace. When you are weak, then you are strong.

This week, look at the aspects of your life where you have trouble giving up control. Be content with the life God has given you and let your spirit rest in the peace he offers.
