Iconic fashion designer Marc Jacobs first rocked extended nails during his appearance at the 2024 Met Gala in May. Since then, he’s sported a few new beautiful sets showcasing crystals, stones, and colorful designs.

Now, the 61-year-old has taken to Instagram to officially honor Black women for paving the way in extravagant nail culture — even if it comes after some accusations of appropriation.

“I want to show some respect and love, appreciation and admiration, [and] give flowers to the Black women who, in the ’70s and ’80s, used their nails to express their creativity,” he said in the video. “And it’s their culture and their history that allows me, today, to enjoy my nails.”

In his caption, he further named nail trailblazers including the late, track and field icon Flo-Jo , rappers Lil Kim and Missy Elliott, historic track star Sha’Carri Richardson , and “all the beautiful, creative Black women who paved the way.” He added, “Flowers, admiration, and infinite respect to you.”

His comment section immediately filled with hand claps, hearts, and thoughts of admiration for his gesture to the Black community.

“Awwwww my bestie this is beautiful and so are those gorgeous nails,” wrote the Queen Bee.

Another person joked, “Much love Sister Laquisha Marc Jacobs. We love you back,” as someone else wrote, “This is what we call APPRECIATION! NOT appropriation. Thank you thank you Thank you Marc for the lesson and for showing love to my aunties and em.”

Just last month Jacobs sat with Vogue where he further expressed his admiration for Black women in the nail space.

“I’ve become very sensitive to the origins of this art, which starts with Black women in the seventies who were incredibly talented and creative,” he said. “This is a part of their history and part of their culture, becoming more mainstream with hip-hop artists in the ‘90s like Missy Elliott and Lil’ Kim. I think it’s important to acknowledge, appreciate, and respect.”
