WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Department on Conservation and Recreation (DCR) implemented 15 electric trucks into it’s fleet this year. These trucks are the handy work of the net zero task force, a voluntary group that looks for ways to maintain public areas while staying environmentally friendly.

MassDCR has used electric equipment for some time, but electric trucks were only adopted earlier this year. Sean Gaffney with the Hampton Ponds Complex told 22News what it’s been like to switch from gas to electric.

“I came from the background using all gas/diesel equipment and I was wondering how long these batteries are gonna last or how the equipment itself is gonna last… and honestly everybody likes the battery equipment more. If they’re adequate for the commercial use, they’re adequate at home,” said Gaffney.

The DCR is using 15 Ford F150 Lightnings throughout Massachusetts, and not only does not have any emissions, it also has a ‘frunk.’

Trucks and busses in Massachusetts contributed to nine percent of the state’s global warming pollution, according to MassDEP. While some may not believe in electric trucks, they could be the next step towards clean utility vehicles.

“I understand people being a little unsure anytime you roll out a new equipment of any kind. There’s gonna be some bugs but these things have come a long way. In my experiences with this 2023 model, I have nothing but good things to say about it,” said Gaffney.

These trucks are a small part of state Executive Order 594, which looks to decrease emissions from state government programs. You can learn more about how the DCR protects the environment in your area on the mass.gov website .
