The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating a non-injury airplane crash that occurred Friday at about 1:30 p.m. at the Erie-Ottawa International Airport.

Ernest Halter, 49, of Yorktown, Indiana, was operating a 1990 Mooney M20J. He began his descent onto runway 27 and the landing gear failed to lower, according to a news release from the patrol. The underside of the plane struck the runway before sliding to a stop .

Halter suffered no injuries as a result of the crash, according to the release.

Someone to know: Judge Cynthia Welty

There were lots of tears at the Hope Court in Clyde on Monday as graduates of the program were celebrated.

The Hope Court is a specialized docket, split between drug and OVI cases. Judge Cynthia Welty was appointed by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine to the Sandusky County Court District One in October to take over the seat formerly held by Judge John Kolesar. Through her previous job, Welty has a special connection to the program. She sat down for a quick interview after the event.

Q: I understand you have an unusual background for a judge, because you were first a nurse?

A: I'm still a registered nurse. I still have my license. I retired from nursing 10 years ago. I did law and nursing, simultaneously.

Did you do both law and nursing at the same time?

I was in private practice as an attorney, and would often work someone's first 4 hours of a 12-hour shift, then go work as a lawyer. It did make life interesting. I think by nature we are always seeing people at their worst. No one wants to see a nurse, unless they have to. And who wants to see a lawyer if they don't have to? So, I get it.

How has it helped you as a judge?

Patience. That is the biggest thing, because, in nursing sometimes people simply don't want to give you all the symptoms, because they are embarrassed. So it's the patience that it takes to ask the questions that aren't so embarrassing, or whatever. It's the same thing here. People don't want to tell you everything because they think it will just get them in more trouble. So it takes the patience to get it out of them, because it's here that they are at their worst, or their lowest. Then it's dealing with that with compassion.
