Biden faces party revolt as polls plummet

Three-quarters of voters believe the Democratic Party would have a higher chance of retaining the presidency if President Joe Biden were not the nominee, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS. The unsurprising results reflect the impact of Biden’s frightening performance at last Thursday’s debate and unveil deeply rooted divisions within the Democratic Party.

The bad news for Biden doesn’t stop there. His approval rating recently hit a new low of 36%, with 45% of respondents saying they strongly disapprove of his performance. Former President Donald Trump now leads the race with 49% of voters supporting him compared to Biden’s 43%.

Despite these statistics, the Biden campaign insists that the president is the most likely candidate to beat Trump in November. The perpetual gaffes that were once disregarded as right-wing propaganda and cheap fakes , however, are now taking a toll on Biden’s reelection chances. The legacy media, White House representatives, and Biden’s own family no longer have any credibility with the public. Most detrimental to Biden’s slim shot at reelection, however, is that a majority of his own party doesn’t even support him at this point.

Biden’s debate performance was so disconcerting that 56% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning registered voters now say the party has a better shot at winning with a candidate other than Biden. This sentiment isn’t ubiquitous among the left-leaning public, but many liberal pundits have expressed this opinion following the debate.

The New York Times editorial board published an article last Friday calling for Biden to leave the race. James Zogby, a longtime member of the Democratic National Committee, has urged the Democratic Party to find a replacement. The coverage on CNN immediately following the debate was almost unanimously negative regarding Biden’s performance. A developing narrative is that first lady Jill Biden is to blame for her husband remaining in the race. Her tone-deaf appearance on the cover of Vogue on Monday certainly isn’t helping her case.

These Democrats who want Joe Biden to step down exist as a majority but only slightly. A large swath of those on the Left continue to want Joe Biden as the nominee, with 43% saying the party has a better chance with him on the ticket. This split is existential for Democrats. It’s a lose-lose situation, given that they’ll have to upset one of the two factions.

Ironically enough, though, there’s no clear replacement for Joe Biden who would have a good shot at defeating Trump anyway.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who is the most logical substitute, doesn’t garner significant support from Democrats. In a theoretical matchup with Trump, the former president would receive 47% of votes compared to Harris's 45%. That’s not to mention that her approval rating is worse than Biden’s, with just 29% of respondents saying they view her favorably.

Neither Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI), nor Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg would win in a theoretical matchup against Trump either. The Democratic Party has put itself in an unfathomably difficult position with no clear escape routes. There are myriad logistical hurdles if it replaces Biden, but its constituents have made it clear that doing so is their preferred option.

That certainly won’t happen if Jill Biden has anything to say about it.
