There are a lot of foods you can grow from scraps. Celery, pineapple, and even avocado all come to mind. But, did you know that there's one easy to start veggie that you likely have lurking under your kitchen cabinets right now?
That's right, the potato is a household staple (and a fan favorite, hello French fries) that can be planted once your spuds start to sprout. Not only does this give you something to do with those potatoes that didn't get eaten before they started to grow, but it may also make it so that you'll never have to purchase another potato again!
See what we mean by watching this one woman's trick for getting an endless supply of potatoes.
All you need to do is follow the directions that @__theprickleparlour__ lays out in her video, where she explains how you can slice and dice a single potato into several different pieces, creating a few different potato babies for your garden.
This works with any potatoes with "eyes," which are those little dimples that you see on mature and immature potatoes alike. Once you've cut some of these out, you can drop them into some loosely packed dirt and set them out in the sun for a few hours a day. Before you know it, you'll see the telltale pops of green that mean your taters of sprouted into new plants, which will bring you a whole new collection of spuds to nosh on, and to replant!
When it comes to growing potatoes, there are a few different ways you can get the job done.
How to Grow Potatoes
First, you'll want to ensure you're giving your potatoes the conditions they like, which means providing them with plenty of acidic soil to start. Next, you'll want to make sure you're getting them in the ground during the right time of the year. Potatoes are cool season plants , so they prefer to be planted about three weeks before the last frost.
Finally, you'll want to plant your potatoes in "hills," which means mounding them up into a long row of dirt. The reason for this is that the tubers will constantly be searching for light, so planting them in a way that allows you to continuously recover them will make it easier to protect those delicate tubers and keep them from getting fried in the sun !
Potatoes Are Easy To Grow
Obviously, anything that can start to sprout in the darkness of your kitchen cabinets is going to be hardy enough that even someone with a black thumb can probably see some success.
That being said, trying something new can often be tricky, so don't get disappointed if it takes you a few tries to master growing potatoes for yourself!
