Chemung County auctions off $1.7 million in foreclosed properties

CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) – Chemung County has auctioned off nearly $1.7 million dollars in county-owned foreclosed properties. The auction included 84 properties. 67.8% of them are in Elmira. The properties owed a combined $596,253.02 in unpaid delinquent “back taxes.” The auction was held on May 24, 2024.

The County Legislature’s Budget committee approved a resolution Monday night to authorize the winning bids. The full legislature now has to approve the sales. The new owners then need to pay all back taxes for each property before a deed is signed over.

Out of the 84 properties, 57 are in Elmira. 7 in Elmira Heights. 4 in Big Flats. 2 in Horseheads. 3 Lowman. 3 in Van Etten. 2 in Erin. 2 in Chemung. 2 in veteran. 1 in Catlin. 1 in Pine City. 1 in Millport.

An administrative assistant at the Chemung County Treasurer’s Office told 18 News: “Upon legislative approval and completion of the steps outlined in the terms/conditions of the sale, a quit claim deed will be recorded in the Chemung County Clerk’s Office (as record keeper of land records). If a deed is not filed into a new property owners name, it would be assumed the bidder did not fulfill the terms and conditions of the contract.”

In a separate resolution, the County also authorized the sale of 65 foreclosed properties back to their original owners. The combined “repurchase price” totaled more than $566,013.
