Leaked Polling From Democratic Firm Spells Disaster in Swing States For Biden

Puck’s Peter Hamby got his hands on a “confidential polling memo” put together by Democratic data firm OpenLabs that showed President Joe Biden’s debate performance has put once solid blue states up for grabs in November.

Hamby wrote the memo “circulating among anxious Democrats is confirming some of their worst fears,” as the data showed that Biden’s disastrous debate against Trump has led to him slipping in the polls even more. “Biden’s diminished standing is now putting previously noncompetitive states like New Hampshire, Virginia, and New Mexico in play for Donald Trump ,” Hamby wrote.

Biden’s 1.5 percentage point lead in Virginia has suddenly swung to a 0.6 percent deficit to Trump as Trump’s 0.5 percent lead in New Hampshire is now a 2.8 percent lead. The data also shows that Biden is no longer the strongest candidate to run against Trump, as alternatives now poll better.

“The memo was put together after the debate by OpenLabs, a progressive nonprofit that conducts polling and message-testing for a constellation of Democratic groups, including the 501(c)4 nonprofit associated with Future Forward, the preferred Super PAC for Biden’s reelection campaign,” Hamby wrote of the memo’s source, adding that OpenLabs is not particularly well-known or transparent, but “their data-driven memos are trusted in Democratic circles, and typically passed around to a small group of clients and strategists.”

Vice President Kamala Harris , Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer , California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg “polled ahead of Biden in every battleground state. (Whitmer, the governor of Michigan, blows away Trump in her home state.) OpenLabs ran a similar survey back in September, and found no differences between any of those Democrats and Biden,” noted Hamby of the key takeaway in the data.

The survey, conducted 72 hours after Thursday’s debate, also found that 40 percent of Biden 2020 voters now believe the president should step aside – only 25 percent had that opinion in May.
