(FOX40.COM) — Sacramento County officials are reminding people that alcohol will be banned on the lower American River and Sherman Island over the long Fourth of July holiday weekend and that life jackets are available for free.

The ban applies to people on the shore and anyone in the waterway starting on July 4 and continuing through Sunday, July 7, according to a county spokesperson.

The part of the American River under the county’s jurisdiction is from Hazel Avenue to where the river meets with the Sacramento River, a stretch of about 20 miles that includes popular raft floating routes used by several businesses.

Sherman Island is located about 50 miles south of the city of Sacramento , just across the water from the city of Antioch.

During the holiday weekend, the single-vehicle fee will be $10 and the fee for an oversized vehicle, such as an RV, or a vehicle with a trailer will be $16, the spokesperson said.

County officials are reminding the public that using a life jacket when entering any waterway can help save lives. Multiple free life jacket loan stations are located throughout the American River Parkway.
