RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The State Corporation’s (SCC) Bureau of Insurance is reminding Virginians to check what their insurance policies cover before heading out on vacation this summer.

According to the bureau, it’s important to know what you will be protected from in the event of theft, a medical emergency or damage to your home or vehicle during a trip.

“Don’t let a lack of insurance coverage put a damper on your summer fun,” said Virginia Insurance Commissioner Scott A. White. “Anticipate summer hazards now to minimize their potential financial damage by ensuring your insurance coverage is adequate and up to date.”

In the event of an injury during a vacation, knowing what your insurance covers and where you’ll be able to get care is important. The bureau recommends keeping policy information and insurance cards on hand while on a trip.

The bureau also encourages Virginians to use the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ Home Inventory mobile app to keep track of their belongings and make it easier to file an insurance claim in the event of an accident.

The SCC has resources regarding insurance and emergency preparedness on its website .
