BELLEFONTE, Pa. (WTAJ) – Centre County’s Elections Director Beth Lechman is set to reign just five months ahead of election season in November and now the search for someone to fill that role is on.

On July 2, one resident who attended the meeting made her voice heard on the matter.

The resident took to the stand to express her views on the situation. She said that hiring a new director is critical to “defending democracy” and that the board needs to find someone with “enormous experience” to fill the role.

She even suggested hiring an interim director. However, commissioners directly responded to that idea.

“I think we’re leaning toward something more permanent rather than something interim,” Commissioner Chairman Mark Higgins said.

Higgins said that the board is currently looking for a replacement, but there has been no word on who that will be.

Higgins also said that it is the board’s intention to get the position filled by November 2024.
