National treasure Tom Hanks is often revered as one of the best actors to ever star on the silver screen due to his extensive resume, which includes many award-winning films .

Tom’s lead titular role as Forrest Gump in the 1994 film of the same name stands out among the countless other roles he’s portrayed excellently. What makes Forrest so loveable is the fact that he prevails in life despite being discounted and often disrespected for being perceived to be feeble-minded. Tom has since revealed that his Oscar-winning portrayal wasn’t as easy to perform as he made it seem on-screen.

During the Cast Away notable’s video chat appearance on In Depth With Graham Besinger, he informed the talk show host that Forrest Gump director Robert ‘Bob’ Zemeckis had to help him capture Forrest.

Tom told Graham that within the first three days of filming Forrest Gump Bob talked with him about his acting.

“Bob came to me on our third day and said ‘hey I know what you’re trying to do. I know how nervous you are and I know how self-conscious this can be before we get into the groove but, we’re not gonna use any of these first three days,’” the Philadelphia lead actor divulged.

Tom explained that Bob told him they were scrapping the first few days of filming because Tom “hadn’t got the character.” Rather than get offended by Bob’s assessment, Tom used it as an opportunity to be transparent with the filmmaker.

“I said ‘I don’t. I don’t. You’re right. So walk me through this,” Tom confessed, referring to how he responded when Bob told him that he wasn’t capturing Forrest correctly.

Tom revealed that Bob’s only advice to him after he asked for help with the role was “don’t try so hard.” That advice was a hard concept for Tom to wrap his head around since he “thought the job was to try as hard as you can.” It turned out that Bob’s advice was absolutely right because after Tom did that everything fell into place.

“From that [conversation with Bob] everything settled down, I mean it was in a moment’s notice,” Tom divulged.

“That’s a type of collaborative process that’s come about between me and Bob now, we’ve had some version of that every time we’ve worked together.”

Tom followed up stating, “As Bob says ‘all these movies are minefields you have no idea if you’re doing it well. You have no idea if you’re making the right decision or not, you just have to go forward with a type of faith that you have in yourself and in each other.’”

Bob and Tom have worked on the 2000 movie Cast Away, the 2004 animated movie The Polar Express, and the 2022 movie Pinocchio together in addition to Forrest Gump.
