Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) - NV Energy announced this week that they will be implementing an additional safeguard to their wildfire safety measures.

When an active wildfire moves too close to NV Energy equipment, an emergency de-energization of the power lines will take place. NV Energy says cutting the power allows them to make the most effective decisions, avoid additional fire risk and protect first responders.

NV Energy admits that such a measure means that customers will experience more frequent outages, with their duration based on the size, direction and location of the wildfire in question. Though advanced notice of an outage is always the goal, NV Energy says that it may not be possible to send an advance notification to customers depending on the severity of the situation.

Restoration times will depend on conditions on the ground, such as containment of the wildfire, speed and direction of the wildfire, potential damage to power lines and equipment, and accessibility.
