DNC Committee Member Presents Plan to Replace Biden, Who Should Sacrifice ‘Ambition for the Sake of the Country’

Former Democratic National Committee Executive Committee member James Zogby presented a plan for President Joe Biden to step down “for the sake of the country” on CNN, Tuesday.

Asked whether the fallout over Biden’s disastrous debate performance last week could have been avoided, Zogby – who has been a member of the DNC for three decades – replied:

Sure, it could have been avoided. People have been talking about this as an issue a few years ago. It’s gotten worse over the last several months. Look, Joe Biden deserves better than this. This is not the way he should go out. He should go out as the person who defeated Donald Trump, who passed significant legislation in his first couple of years before we had a dysfunctional Republican leadership in Congress, and it would be an opportunity, I think, for him to give a farewell address where he becomes the person who sacrificed ambition for the sake of the country. It would be his moment in history where he’d go out, I think, elevated in stature rather than reduced.

He told CNN anchor Erica Hill :

I do not want to see a situation where for the next three, four, five months, what we’re doing is waiting for the next verbal gaffe, waiting for the next false step, waiting for some other sign that Joe Biden is too old. That’s what the media will do, that’s what you all will do, and frankly, the debate showed that, and that’s all we’ve been talking about since, and most likely what we’ll be talking about for the next month to come.”

Zogby concluded, “We need to be talking about a Democratic candidate with a vision for the future who actually can galvanize the party and the country, and we need to focus on that versus Donald Trump, not on whether Joe Biden can get his sentences straight.”

On Monday, Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) became the first House Democrat to call for Biden to step aside, joining a growing number of voices , including the New York Times Editorial Board, who say the president should drop out of the race against former President Donald Trump .

Following Biden’s performance in CNN’s first presidential debate, Thursday, several MSNBC hosts reported that members of the Democratic Party and the president’s circle had become “panicked” and were discussing what to do next.

CNN political analyst Carl Bernstein also revealed on Monday that several people “very close to” Biden have been concerned about his “cognitive decline” for more than a year.

“The president did not do a good job the other night during the debate,” acknowledged Biden campaign co-chair Mitch Landrieu this week. “He actually acknowledged that himself. He talked about that the next day. Nobody’s defending that performance; it was a bad performance.”
