FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A new program that aims to reduce fentanyl overdose deaths in Fresno County has been introduced by WestCare, officials announced on Tuesday.

According to WestCare officials, the Opioid Education and Naloxone Distribution program aims to reduce the number of fentanyl overdoses across Fresno County with services that provide a combination of education and harm reduction resources to the community.

Officially providing services as of June 1, officials say the program directly serves individuals or unhoused individuals who use or are around these substances and collaborates with community partners in high-risk areas and service providers who engage with people who use these substances.

According to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Fresno County experienced 141 opioid overdose-related deaths in 2023.

Besides providing harm reduction resources, the program also offers opioid and overdose education, training on reversal medication like Naloxone, fentanyl test kits, and referrals to social services like Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), residential and outpatient treatment for a Substance Use Disorder (SUD), housing services, HIV supportive services, and more, according to officials.

WestCare officials say the program was possible with a three-year grant provided by CDPH. For more information about the program, contact them at oend@westcare.com or by phone during regular business hours at 559-832-2068.
