Jeopardy! fans slam Ken Jennings over ‘painful’ clue claiming fact checkers missed major error

Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings landed on fans’ bad side after they peeped that a game show clue wasn’t thoroughly vetted from their perspective.

Monday’s night episode ran smoothly until show contestants Zoe Strassfield, Matt Brooks, and Cat Pisacano encountered a clue from the Rhyme Time category. The category called for a synonymous answer that had two rhyming words. None of the contestants chose to buzz in to solve the $800 clue, which happened to be “A kayak inspection.”

The TV personality, 50, pointed out that the players were "stumped" before announcing the answer, which was "A canoe review."

Some game show watchers were upset with clue, believing it to be misleading because of the differences between canoes and kayaks.

"Kayaks aren’t canoes. That was a painful clue," one raged in Jeopardy!-themed online thread. "Yea, I thought kayaks were kayaks!" a second cosigned.

"Kayaks and canoes are not synonymous. As an avid boater that one really stuck in my craw," a third ranted.

Even more slammed Jeopardy!’s production team for not properly “fact checking” the clue before adding it to the board.

"I never understand how mistakes like this that are so easy to fact check get through," an angered viewer admitted.

"Anyone who's used both knows how absolutely different they are," another critic mentioned. "I was displeased with this clue."

There were some fans who tried to be understanding, noting that albeit kayaks and canoes may share a relation, they still shouldn't have been recognized as being the same in the clue.

Ken is not new to provoking the ire of Jeopardy! viewers. In April, Ken was shamed by game show fans for a confusing and distracting habit that he had been doing throughout Jeopardy!’s 2024 Invitational Tournament.

Many had become fed-up with they way he abbreviated the tournament. Instead of calling the tournament by its full name, which is alot to say over-and-over again, Ken referred to the games as "JIT" and introduced contestants using the term as well. During the mini-tournament at the time Ken said: "Next up on our JIT list." While Ken didn’t mean any harm behind shortening the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament to “JIT,” it did cause some to raise their eyebrows.

According to Urban Dictionary, the word "jit" is "what everyone calls each other in FL, as well as a way to greet each other" and "means somebody younger than you" but often refers to "young thugs/wannabe thugs or other punky kids."

After hearing the term come out of Ken’s mouth on live television, fans immediately took to X, formerly Twitter, to address him saying it. One viewer wrote: "The Inside Jeopardy podcast has been saying Jit for months now, and it's terrible. Jeopardy Invitational sounds classy." Another added: "It sounds like a slur. I will never pronounce it like that lol." And a third added: "Stop trying to make JIT happen."
