(Des Moines) According to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Iowa Traffic Fatality Count, there were 27 fewer traffic fatalities on Iowa’s roadways than one year ago. As of July 1, 135 people have died on Iowa’s roadways compared to 162 one year ago. This is eight lower than in 2022 and nine lower than in 2021.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper and District #4 Public Information Officer Shelby McCreedy refers to the 100 deadliest days on Iowa’s Roads, which start the last week of May and end on the last day of August.

The Iowa State Patrol continues to see motorists traveling at triple-digit speeds. McCreedy says drivers who increase their speed to over ten miles per hour over the speed limit increase their chances of death two-and-a-half times.

In 2023, 1,199 tickets were issued for speeds over 100 miles per hour.
