Independence Day is Thursday , so your neighborhood will most likely be serenaded with the sound of fireworks .

Why it matters: For most dog owners, it's one of a handful of days out of the year when their pups become terrified of the noise we view as synonymous with celebrating the holiday.

By the numbers: A record number of dogs are lost during the holiday.

    • AKC Reunite, a microchip and recovery organization, told Axios last year that there was an 81% increase in incidents of lost pets reported on July 5, 2022.

    To protect your pup:

    • Make sure your dog is microchipped and inside ahead of the fireworks.
    • Do something positive — like pet or feed your dog — to make them feel good when they're anxious.
    • Create a haven for your dog during fireworks. If your dog uses a crate, you can try covering it and providing a chew toy.
    • You can also try playing music or turning on the TV to drown out the fireworks.
