In this episode of Empowered Hawaii, hosts Jeff Mikulina and Kelly Simek join forces with the KHON2 weather team, Justin Cruz and Kamaka Pili, to dig into the pressing issue of how climate change is affecting severe weather patterns. This episode will also guide viewers on adaptive planning as well as how to prepare for future hurricanes.

The journey begins with Jeff and Kelly speaking with Greg Asner, the Director for the Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science, who provides a foundational understanding of the current state of climate change and its implications. Following this, Justin and Kamaka speak with Dr. Alison Nugent, Associate Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at UH Mānoa, who elaborates on the science behind climate change and its direct impact on weather systems.

To add to the conversation, Jeff and Kamaka sit down with Dr. Victoria Keener, Research Professor at the East West Center & ASU, who discusses the specific effects climate change is having on Hawaii’s unique environment. Kelly then speaks with Wendy Meguro, Research Professor at UH Mānoa, to explore the proactive measures being implemented in response to these impacts.

Adding to the diverse perspectives, Jeff speaks with Kylie Wager Cruz, Senior Attorney from Earthjustice, who sheds light on climate mitigation and the legal and environmental justice aspects of climate action. Kelly continues the discussion with John Marra from NOAA to learn about climate adaptation and James Barros of HI-EMA, who both provide expert advice on disaster preparedness and response.

Finally, Kelly and Justin sit down with Jaimee Jones from Zephyr Insurance, offering viewers actionable tips on how to safeguard their homes against severe weather events.
