Good Samaritans who helped wrangle a horse off of a Southern California freeway after two others were fatally struck are being hailed as heroes.

The California Highway Patrol started receiving calls about horses running in traffic lanes on the 5 Freeway at the 210 Freeway transition in Sylmar shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A short time later, more calls reported that some of the horses had been struck by vehicles, CHP Sgt. Frank Vargas said.

“When we arrived on scene, unfortunately, we found a couple of separate scenes involving vehicles and deceased horses,” Vargas said.

A third horse was rescued by good Samaritans who used a rope to guide the animal to the right shoulder of the freeway.

“They’re kind of heroes in this case because if they had not wrangled that horse that horse would have traveled into traffic lanes,” Vargas said.

There was no word on whether anyone was injured inside the vehicles that struck the horses.

It was also unclear how the horses got onto the freeway.
