Jeopardy! fans were up in arms about a mispronunciation that happened on Monday''s game.

New champion Cat Pisacano, who defeated former Survivor contestant Drew Basile , faced off against players Matt Brooks and Zoe Strassfield on July 1. This was Cat's second game to see if she would become a second-day champion. In the first round Cat met her match in Matt as they were side by side. Then the moment came when fans had a lot to say about contestant Matt and how he answered a clue .

Matt selected a clue in the category, "Taking You To School", for $400. The clue read: “Anatomy: There are both false & true vocal cords in this hollow, tubular structure, also called the voice box.”

Matt responded, “What’s the lar-nyx?” to the clue which host Ken Jennings looked hesitant to accept but did. “Yes, we will take that, yes,” Ken decided and then clarified the way to pronounce the word, saying "Larynx."

That moment in the game had fans sounding off furiously on social media about the decision to accept Matt's pronunciation of the voice organ. On X formerly Twitter a fan wrote: "Are standards really so low that we must accept 'larnyx' for larynx." A second fan said: "How was the answer of 'larnyx' accepted? Hoping there’s a score revision coming but not optimistic." Another said: "Did Jeopardy really accept 'larnyx'? A fourth fan wrote: "Why did @Jeopardy accept 'larnyx' as a correct pronunciation?? (Yes, it was a half hour ago and it's still bothering me)."

On a Jeopardy! Reddit thread for the July 1 game, one fan exclaimed how this wrong pronunciation was accepted when there have been other cases in the trivia games' history where they haven't accepted wrong pronunciation and/or spelling: "How in the world did they accept 'larnyx' as a correct response for 'larynx'? They say pronunciation doesn’t count, but they routinely count answers wrong when the spelling and pronunciation don’t go together - 'larnyx' is just not a conceivable way to pronounce 'larynx'. We were expecting them to come back and correct the score on that and they didn’t. It really soured the whole game for me."

A few comments responded with examples from a J-Archive links showing how the perceived mispronunciation of larynx has been accepted "more than once." There was a time in November 14, 1997 and March 27, 2006 . For the March 27, 2006 game, a fan shared the dialogue from the game with late host Alex Trebek and the contestant Ed Angleton: "Ed: What is the 'larnyx'? Alex: Yes. No! ...Yes, we'll accept that pronunciation; it's a common pronunciation."

The game ended with Cat losing and Matt, despite his pronunciation, becoming the new Jeopardy! champion with $10,600.
