Biden team scrambles to get ahead of more bad news with all-hands memo

President Joe Biden 's campaign has circulated a memorandum to staff looking to get ahead of a bruising poll expected to be released on Wednesday after the president's disastrous debate performance last week.

The memo, obtained by the Washington Examiner, included polling that showed Biden had been only slightly harmed by the debate.

However, it also showed the campaign expects a new poll from the New York Times and Siena College to be released, which the memo said "is likely to show a slightly larger swing in the race." The memo also noted that "we should all keep in mind that, just last week, the NYT themselves acknowledged that they are often a polling outlier."

“We are going to see a few polls come out today and we want you all to hear from us on what we know internally and what we expect to come externally,” campaign Chairwoman Jen O’Malley Dillon and Campaign Manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in the memo. “Polls are a snapshot in time and we should all expect them to continue to fluctuate — it will take a few weeks, not a few days, to get a full picture of the race.”

Since the debate last Thursday in Atlanta, Biden has faced increased calls to drop out of the race, and leaked internal Democratic polling obtained by Puck News on Tuesday showed a significant hit to Biden's numbers post-debate.

The most recent New York Times-Siena College poll released a day before the debate, on June 26, showed Trump leading Biden, 48% to 44% — a 3-point change from the previous April poll by the outlets.

Trump has led in most recent national polls, before and after the debate, with the RealClearPolitics polling average showing Trump leading Biden, 46.5% to 44.1%.

The Biden campaign had a rough Tuesday, with the first House Democrat calling on the president to step aside and leaked polling showing Biden taking a hit in several states after the debate, among other problems.

Biden has publicly insisted he will remain in the race, but a report from the New York Times suggested the president is aware of how vulnerable a position the debate has left his candidacy in.
