The Peoria County Coroner's Office has released the name of the 31-year-old man who died early Tuesday morning after he was found unresponsive in a holding cell at the Peoria County Jail.

Wayne Hatton of Peoria died at 1:54 a.m. Tuesday at Carle Health Methodist Hospital, according to a news release from Coroner Jamie Harwood, whose office conducted a preliminary autopsy later in the day.

That autopsy was inconclusive, with Harwood saying that there was no indication of any lethal injuries despite rumors of an altercation before Hatton's death.

Hatton was found unconscious in his cell at 12:48 a.m. Tuesday after he had been arrested Monday night on battery, assault, criminal damage and trespass to property charges following an incident at a restaurant in Downtown Peoria. He sustained injuries during his arrest, which were severe enough to warrant a hospital visit before he was processed into the jail.

According to Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins, Hatton was placed in a holding cell due to his injuries. He said that officers checked on Hatton numerous times before he was found unresponsive in the cell.

Harwood said that biopsies and a toxicology report remain pending, with those expected to take four to six weeks for completion.

The case has been referred to Illinois State Police, who are investigating the incident in accordance with sheriff's office policy.
