Miami Township police officer recognized for on-duty act of kindness

A Miami Township police officer is being recognized for a recent act of kindness he performed on the job.

Overnight on June 15, Cpl. Hunter Willoughby received a frantic phone call from a postpartum mother who said she was unable to feed her 1-week-old infant, the police department announced in a Tuesday social media post. The new mom had reportedly told dispatchers her milk dried up and she could not obtain formula at that time of night.

Willoughby went to a local Meijer store around 3:30 a.m., which was closed at the time, and knocked on the front door. Body-worn camera footage shared in the post shows Willoughby explaining the situation to an employee.

The employee allowed the officer to come inside. He purchased formula and bottles for the mother while he was at the store and delivered it to her home.

He paid for it out of his own pocket, and wouldn't accept payment from the mother when he brought it to her.

"You don't often hear about everything a police officer does in the course of their shift," Police Chief Mike Mills wrote in the social media post, "but I do and this is an example of the Miami Township Way."
