Carrying on the Carter Cash legacy. Last Friday, the Johnny Cash estate released a new (to us) album from the Man in Black called Songwriter , which is a collection of songs solely written by Cash that were recorded in 1993 but never released. Johnny and June Carter's son, John Carter Cash, co-produced the finished album with Cash’s longtime engineer David “Fergie” Ferguson, and they stripped the demos back to just his father’s vocals, re-recording the songs with a very talented group of musicians including Marty Stuart, Dan Auerbach, Vince Gill, and more. All of the songs are incredible, and exactly the kind of music we’ve all come to know and love from the country icon in terms of the gruff vocal delivery and songs that cut to the heart of the human experience in a way only Johnny Cash can. But one song in particular got the full music video treatment with a very special star, as Johnny and June's granddaughter Grace June Cash stars in the video for "Hell Out There." John says he remembers his dad writing it about the Voyager spaceship and around the time it launched:
"I believe dad wrote it about the Voyager spaceship sometime around when it launched. I remember him sitting in Cowboy Jack Clement’s office in the early ‘80s and singing it for him." The video was directed by Matt Paskert (Morgan Wallen), and follows Grace on an adventure where she comes upon the Cash Cabin, Johnny’s hallowed sanctuary in Hendersonville, Tennessee where he wrote and recorded some of his final songs. Also the site where Songwriter was produced, it's a very special place for all of the Cash family and really cool to see as Grace goes through some of their family photos and heirlooms, as well as some Johnny and June's personal items like Johnny’s Bible and June’s banjolin. Some of the other items featured include the "Cash and Carter family fishing poles, Johnny’s desk from his office, his portable Ampex tape recorder and Martin Parlor guitar, June’s tackle box and her 1890’s Steinway upright piano," which I find incredibly cool to see as well. John says the final shot, where you see Grace's blue eyes in contrast to the video which was done entirely in black and white otherwise, brought tears to his eyes:
"It's a black and white video but right at the end of it you see my daughter’s beautiful blue eyes that are just the same as my mother’s. I can't help but cry every time I watch it." Obviously, the entire project is very important to the family, but this feels just a little bit more special and a beautiful way to honor the legacy of Johnny Cash.
