Crunchyroll is Bringing Kizumonogatari to Theaters For Just One Day

The Monogatari series might be a little bit obscure outside of Japan, but it certainly has plenty of fans. Earlier this year, a compilation film of one part of the series, Kizumonogatari, was released in Japan, and now it’s coming to theaters… with a few catches.

Crunchyroll has announced that it’s secured the theatrical release rights for Kizumonogatari -Koyomi Vamp-, a compilation film that combines all three Kizumonogatari films into one big film. The film will play in theaters in a special one day event starting in August, but it’ll only be in a few countries.

Monogatari fans in North America and Mexico will be able to see the film in theaters on August 28, 2024, while fans in Australia will have to wait a week, where it will be available on September 5, 2024. That latter part is a bit of a bummer for Australians like me, but hey, a week late is better than not at all.

The film is a prequel series to Monogatari, and tells the origin of the story. Here’s how Crunchyroll describes it:

It was one fateful evening when Koyomi Araragi encountered her – Kiss-shot Acerola-orion Heart-under-blade: Legendary Vampire, Killer of Apparitions, and King of Apparitions. Her legs and arms were cruelly torn apart, her extravagant dress soaked in red; she’s a monster who finds herself in a tragic state, lying in a pool of her own blood. However, Koyomi finds her to be beautiful this way.

Curiously, the press release sent by Crunchyroll lists the runtime of the film as 114 minutes, or just under 2 hours, while the Japanese release of the film ran for 144 minutes, about 2 and a half hours. We’re not sure if this is just a typo or the film has been cut down further for its Western release, but we’ve reached out to Crunchyroll for clarification.

The release comes after Aniplex revealed a new Monogatari anime , an adaptation of Off Season and Monster Season, something that fans were very excited to hear.
