NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — While boating on the Fourth of July is a favorite among some families, not everyone follows rules while on the water.

That’s why the National Association of Safe Boating is kicking its Operation Dry Water campaign into high gear over the next three days.

“It’s an operation dedicated to boating enforcement, boating safety and the prevention of boating under the influence on our state waters,” said Cpt. Keith Williams, with the Connecticut Environmental Conservation Police.

According to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, there were six fatal boating crashes in 2023 in the state, which led to seven deaths.

Williams said problems are caused by inexperience and weather conditions. That’s why water patrol officers will be on high alert.

There will be extra patrols along the Connecticut River, Long Island Sound and lakes. Officers are able to do checks to see if drivers are under the influence. If so, you could be charged with a misdemeanor.

Williams urges boaters to have safety equipment onboard at all times.
