The Bosque Arts Center recently announced that Jimmy Fortune of the Statler Brothers will serve as the headliner and judge for the 2024 Texas Troubadour Songwriter Classic.
After judging the finalists in the live Troubadour event on Saturday, October 26, Jimmy Fortune will perform a concert with his quartet to close out the evening.
Jimmy Fortune became a permanent member of the Statler Brothers in August of 1982 when tenor Lew DeWitt’s health forced him to retire. Fortune quickly made his presence felt, penning number one hits for the group such as “Elizabeth” and “My Only Love.”
Jimmy has performed in all of the U.S. States, in Canadian Provinces, and in front of audiences as large as 100,000. He was part of the Statlers’ annual Happy Birthday USA celebration in Staunton, Virginia, for 14 years. He also sang on many of the Statlers’ gold, platinum, and double platinum recordings.
Jimmy is currently living in Tennessee, writing, touring, and recording music.
Songwriter contest
The time to submit songs into the Texas Troubadour Songwriter Classic runs through Tuesday, August 20.
The contest accepts original songs in the country music genre (Americana, Red Dirt, traditional, blues, gospel, and rockabilly flavors acceptable).
Songwriters and singer/ songwriters may enter simple recordings in mp3 format online through midnight of the deadline. Entries on CD need to be postmarked by that date as well.
Entries will be judged on the lyrics and music alone; recording quality will not be a consideration, therefore studio recordings are not required. Contestants are encouraged to create mp3s or CDs of their original compositions using any available technology. All entries must consist of vocals accompanied by some sort of musical instrument. A cappella and instrumental entries will not be accepted.
Entry fees are $15 per song and $15 to be considered for the Songwriter Classic in October.
The two-part contest is open to country music songwriters and singer/songwriters with $3,000 in awards available: $1,000 for the Song of the Year based on digital entries, and $1,500 and $500 in awards at the live event.
Past winners of the Texas Troubadour have included Tobi Lee, Sadie Self, Zac Clifton, Amy Taylor, Brian Barrett, John Swantner, Bill Sibley, Carl Hutchens, and Stoney Gabel.
Past judges have been Moe Bandy, T.G. Sheppard and Kelly Lang, Janie Fricke, Red Steagall, Michael Martin Murphey, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Suzy Bogguss and Doug Crider, Hal Ketchum, Marty Haggard, Jeannie Seely, and Eddy Raven and Frank Myers.
