A state trooper shot and wounded a driver who allegedly was trying to strike a town constable with his vehicle in Sullivan County Tuesday afternoon, state police said Wednesday.

State police said the encounter began around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, when troopers responded to a report of a suspicious subject in a vehicle at a business on Route 97 in Barryville.

The troopers located the subject, who said he had a gun and would shoot the troopers, state police said.

State police said they tried to stop the man, later identified as Paul Gosselin, 63, of Augusta, Maine, when he fled to a secondary business on Route 97 and exited his vehicle.

Gosselin then re-entered his vehicle and began to drive in the direction of a Town of Lumberland constable who was on foot near Gosselin's vehicle, state police said.

A trooper saw the vehicle accelerating toward the constable and fired several rounds, striking Gosselin once, state police said.

Troopers gave first aid to Gosselin and then he was transported by an emergency medical services crew to an area hospital, where he is currently listed in stable condition.
