If you've ever had a conversation with a toddler, you know how imaginative their approach to language can be. Because little kids are still learning how to talk, they tend to mix things up and make lots of unexpected word choices that usually end up being pretty hilarious. It's not uncommon for the rest of the family to end up talking the same way before long!

In one hilarious video, a mom uses a series of "little kid words in real life" — and parents everywhere have done the exact same thing. It's easy to forget that other adults don't know what terms like "cheese butter" and "yestweek" mean...even though they make perfect sense when you think about it!

"None of these are from J this time! But y'all have the best submissions anyways," wrote @mrs.frazzled . These words are seriously priceless. Everybody should talk this way, honestly. Commenters had some funny examples of their own to add to the list.

"'Sprinkle cheese' is the current big player over here instead of shredded cheese," wrote Taylor.

"Omg two guys cereal! My kid called Lucky Charms 'choppy arms' and that is the permanent name," wrote Anarchy Mom.

"One of [my] students says 'hanitizer' for hand sanitizer. I think it's perfect and hilarious!" wrote lisapabisa75.

"My son used to say 'sun scream' instead of sunscreen and I'm still sad that he doesn't anymore," wrote MimiKat022.

As parents, it's worth writing some of these down so you can laugh about them in years to come!

Why Do Kids Make Up Words?

According to Better Speech, it's completely normal for little kids to invent their own way of talking.

"When there is a gap in someone's language knowledge or the ability to create the word for something, they may make up a word or sound in its place. This is usually temporary until the knowledge or ability increases. So in children, we see this when children start to label objects and try to communicate . They know what they want to say, but are not yet able to make the sounds. Or, they have decided to call an object by a certain sound or name because they don't yet know the correct word."

As parents, there's no need to correct kids or worry about whether or not they're using "real" words.

"Words are the building blocks of language, and children use them to communicate with each other. Words can be anything — sound or symbol — that describes an object in some way. And so, if your child uses a sound or word consistently, then we would say that is a true, or 'real' word. For the purposes of speech and language development, a real word is a word that is used consistently to mean one specific object. Regardless of what the name of the object really is, if someone is using that sound or word to only refer to that thing or object, we consider that a real word."

That settles it: "Sun puddles" is staying!
