As fans and former players dissect what went wrong for the USMNT during its disastrous 2024 Copa America exit and try to figure out the best path forward, two former USMNT forwards butted heads on social media in the process.

Eric Wynalda, who played in three World Cups in the 1990s and is a former ESPN and Fox analyst, went after Herculez Gomez on X on Tuesday as hot takes were flying about head coach Gregg Berhalter’s future with the team after Monday’s 1-0 loss to Uruguay.

“I’m actually more tired of @herculezg Why do you think your opinion matters? You were so average and that’s being nice,” Wynalda, 55, wrote. “Respect your elders @AlexiLalas – especially when they were far more significant than you. Go cover MMA or something – or your beloved Mexico. Or stop?”

Gomez, who is Mexican-American and played in the 2010 World Cup for the USMNT, responded with a screengrab that shows Wynalda blocking Gomez on X.

“The only thing softer than this generation is ..,” Gomez, the 42-year-old ESPN analyst, wrote. “You’ve burned every bridge and wasted every opportunity you’ve ever had post playing career. Can’t wait for the Hallmark movie 🍿.”

Wynalda most recently made headlines in May when, while he was coaching his son’s club team, he was accused of calling an opposing player a “bitch” and insulting the teen’s mother, TMZ Sports reported at the time.

Emotions are running high after the USMNT laid an egg in the Copa America, having been expected to at minimum advance out of the group stage.

But after defeating Bolivia in its opener, the team lost to Panama after Tim Weah’s 18th-minute red card reduced them to 10 men for the rest of the game.

Their loss to Uruguay, combined with a Panama win over Bolivia on Monday, knocked them out of the tournament on home soil.

There are now calls for the 50-year-old Berhalter’s job as the U.S. prepares to host the 2026 World Cup.
