ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Former Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia has died at 80, the coroner’s office confirmed Wednesday.

Fiduccia held the position for 20 years and retired in December 2016.

“I’m looking forward to retirement,” she said at the time. “[I’m] going to miss the place [and] going to miss all the families.  But, I am so incredibly honored to have been able to be just a little bit a part of their lives at the worst time of their life that I don’t know how I could ever say ‘thank you’ to all the families that I have been able to serve.”

Fiduccia had served as coroner since 1995 and was re-elected several times.

“There’s no way I can ever say thank you to all of those people for allowing me into their homes, for allowing me to tell them the absolute worst news of their life, and then I actually get a hug from them,” she said.

Bill Hintz was elected to fill the position she vacated; he left in disgrace after pleading guilty to stealing money from the dead.

Jennifer Muraski currently serves as Winnebago County Coroner.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of former Winnebago County Coroner, Elizabeth ‘Sue’ Fiduccia. Her caring commitment and dedication to our community will be a legacy that will live on for years to come. I am honored to have had her as a mentor and as a friend. She will be missed by so many. Our thoughts and prayers remain with her family… now and in the days to come,” Muraski wrote .
