The accomplished competitors are trying to choose a team nickname, one that fans can use to while cheering them on. .
The current Olympic team includes Simone Biles , Suni Lee , Jordan Chiles , Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera . They all recently qualified for the Games on June 30 after the two-day U.S. Olympic gymnastics team trials, which took place in Minneapolis. Also qualified to head to the games as traveling replacement athletes are Leanne Wong and Joscelyn Roberson.
Nickname ideas for the five members of Team USA’s Women’s Gymnastics
In an interview with Hoda Kotb, the newly official Team USA for gymnastics were throwing around name ideas for their group. Kotb had a couple of suggestions, including “Fantastic Five,” “Phenomenal Five” and “Fearless Five.” The athletes immediately turned down the first two names.
Biles was intrigued by the “Fearless Five” moniker, saying, “ OK, that's cute . But I feel like it has to be a little bit more younger, hip.”

The gold medalist also suggested that they ask the “TikTokers,” referring to young, Gen Z users of the popular app. The audiences got right to it after hearing their help was needed, suggesting names like “Ferocious Five,” “Golden Five” and “Formidable Five.” They also suggested more niche names such as “Fetch Five” (a reference to Mean Girls) , and Girls5Eva (referring to a sitcom).
Even Kotb has received her own special nickname for the upcoming Games. The crew made sure to tell the host she would be called the “Olympic Mom.” Biles was sure to tell Rivera, who is the youngest on the team at 16 years, “ Hezly, if you need anything , this is Hoda, ‘gymnastics’ Olympic mother.’”
While the competitors are in search of a new, trendy name for their crew, there are quite a few monikers that have already been used by past teams. In 2012, the five members — Gabby Douglas , Jordyn Wieber , McKayla Maroney , Aly Raisman and Kyla Ross — were called the “Fierce Five.”
The name of the “Final Five” was given to the 2016 team, which had members Biles, Raisman, Douglas, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian . The 2021 team, the “Fighting Four,” was given to Biles, Lee, Chiles and Carey, all of whom will be attending the Paris games. This year, however, there is the addition of newcomer, Rivera.

Biles also had a fun nickname for her older teammate, Aly Raisman, when they performed in the 2016 Rio Olympics together. Biles dubbed Raisman “Grandma” when the gymnast was only 22 years old.
Now that Biles is the oldest member of the team at 27 — and the oldest female American gymnast at the Olympics — Biles has issued an apology to her friend. “ I definitely have to apologize to Aly for calling her grandma because, whew, I feel like I’m way older now than me calling her grandma when we were younger.”
Biles then made a joke about her own age, saying, “And, you know, it’s what, 11 [p.m.]? So, it’s definitely past my bedtime … What was the rest of the question? See, I’m forgetting.”
You can catch Biles and the rest of the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team when they hit the mat at the Games, which are set to air from Friday, July 26, until Sunday, August 11.
