Democrats from Republican districts are suddenly OK with Trump

At least two Democrats that represent House districts that voted for Donald Trump in 2020 have all of a sudden decided they are OK with the return of a president their party describes as a threat to democracy.

The pivot for the two representatives comes less than a week after President Joe Biden showed just how badly he as aged during a debate against Trump on CNN that has prompted questions about whether he should remain as the Democratic Party's nominee.

But rather than call for Biden's replacement, two members are just throwing in the towel entirely and admitting that Trump is likely to win.

The first to downplay the return of Trump to office was Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), who represents Maine 's 2nd Congressional District, which Trump won in both of his presidential campaigns and is expected to win again this November.

"Democrats’ post-debate hand-wringing is based on the idea that a Trump victory is not just a political loss, but a unique threat to our democracy," Golden wrote in an op-ed for Bangor Daily News. "I reject the premise. Unlike Biden and many others, I refuse to participate in a campaign to scare voters with the idea that Trump will end our democratic system."

Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA), who represents a Washington district that is considered reliably Republican , also joined the pile-on. In an interview with KATU, the congresswoman said that she believes that Trump is going to win the election and that Biden's debate performance sealed the deal.

"About 50 million Americans tuned in and watched that debate," she said. "I was one of them for about five very painful minutes. We all saw what we saw, you can’t undo that, and the truth I think, is that Biden is going to lose to Trump. I know that’s difficult, but I think the damage has been done by that debate.”

For Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez, this admission that Biden is going to lose is remarkable, insofar as they are showing a willingness to break ranks with the standard bearer of their party. At the same time it is a cheap and disingenuous attempt to show independence from a president that is woefully unpopular.

Both members may try to run from the party that has covered up the senility of the commander-in-chief, but the fact remains that they have shown little independence from their party when it matters.

Golden, for his part, may say that he is OK with the return of Trump, but he refused to buck his party when then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) orchestrated two sham impeachments against Trump in 2019 and 2021. It is a rather telling sign of political expedience when a lawmaker who voted to impeach a president says he is on board with that person returning to office.

Gluesenkamp Perez has only been in Congress for a year and a half, but her voting record has largely tracked with the Democratic Party, although she has voted for a handful of resolutions to repeal Biden administration regulations.

Regardless of whether Biden is the nominee or not, Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez are trying to deceive voters about their record as partisan Democrats in Congress . If Trump wins, voters should be aware that both of these members will do everything they can to block his agenda.
