Soccer’s biggest windup merchant is set to return to Merseyside this summer, with Neal Maupay heading back to Everton .

The striker hasn’t exactly endeared himself to some of his fellow professionals over the years. Maupay has made a habit of winding up his opponents over the years – James Maddison can certainly attest to that, having been the subject of a particularly brutal putdown following his omission from England’s squad for Euro 2024.

And the Frenchman has confirmed he will be returning to Goodison Park this summer, having spent last season on loan with Brentford. Not that Liverpool’s neighbors will be that thrilled to see him back.

Speaking on talkSPORT , Maupay said: “I think it’s pretty simple. I was on loan at Brentford last season. They had an option. They haven’t taken it yet. So they had to the end of June and then I will be back next week at Everton.”

It’s unlikely that he’ll get a warm reception across Stanley Park. Maupay hasn’t exactly been complimentary about his time at Everton so far, having joined the club in 2022, only to score a single goal in his 32 appearances for the Toffees since.

“I’m always honest and tell the truth; last season, I didn’t enjoy myself,” he told Sky Sports.

“I didn’t enjoy my football and life up there was tough. The people around the club, the fans, made my life really difficult.”

Neither he nor Everton fans might be that thrilled about his return then. Liverpool though certainly won’t mind.

While Maupay has done his best to constantly wind his opponents up, he hasn’t had much to shout about when it comes to meeting the Reds. In nine appearances against the Reds since 2019, he has scored a single goal or recorded an assist.

He has been on the winning side once, having been part of the Brighton team that won 1-0 at Anfield in February 2021, but his wretched record against Liverpool certainly shouldn’t give Arne Slot anything to fear should Maupay end up lining up against his side next season.
