(FOX40.COM) — A Calaveras County woman was arrested after leaving a child on a hot road, leading law enforcement to search her home, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to the sheriff’s office, on Sunday around 8:35 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a toddler walking in the roadway.

Witnesses told deputies that a woman carrying a child was acting “erratically, yelling at neighbors’ dogs, throwing rocks at animals, and attempting to wave down vehicles.”

The sheriff’s office said the woman set the child down on the pavement wearing one shoe to “confront a vehicle” and that a concerned bystander picked up the unattended child.

The woman allegedly left and did not return for the child.

The sheriff’s office said deputies went to interview the woman to see if she had any other children under her care and conducted a sweep of her home which revealed it to be in a “deplorable and dangerous condition.”

According to the sheriff’s office, the woman appeared to be under the influence of meth during her interaction with deputies.

The sheriff’s office contacted Child Protective Services to investigate and take custody of the child.

The woman was taken to the hospital and later arrested.

According to the sheriff’s office, the woman was booked on charges of felony child endangerment, being under the influence of a controlled substance and resisting peace officers in the performance of their duties.
