HBO's Hard Knocks series gives fans a look behind the curtain around the NFL. This year, the New York Giants are in the crosshairs of their coverage. Everyone got a notable look at their preparations for free agency during this week's episode.

Giants targeted Pro Bowlk RB Austin Ekeler to replace Saquon Barkley

According to the show, New York also considered signing Joe Mixon, Zack Moss and Tony Pollard before choosing to add Devin Singletary.

Ekeler ended up signing a two-year deal with the NFC East rival Washington Commanders, instead.

He's been a top-flight receiving back over the course of his career. At 29 years old, Ekeler has certainly lost a step when it comes to burst and agility. That being said, it will be intriguing to see how he performs in 2024.

Giants GM Joe Schoen made one thing clear in the first episode. They were not going to over-value the running back position during the draft or free agency. The Giants simply could not afford to because of the salary cap.

Fellow executive Tim McDonnell questioned him on potentially losing Barkley.

“We lose Saquon, what’s our identity gonna be?” -- McDonnell

“We’ve gotta upgrade the offensive line, and you’re paying Daniel Jones $40M. It’s not to hand the ball off to a $12M back.” -- Schoen

Schoen discussed the RB position in comparison to other positions. When the group of executives looked at their list of needs in the offseason, Schoen noted, "running back keeps going down".

The Giants chose to focus on cornerback, pass-rusher, and a top wide receiver. All three of which they addressed in some capacity.

The initial episode of this season of Hard Knocks was packed full with useful information for Giants fans and the NFL world alike. Let's see how their choices play out this year in New York.
